Barcelona’s Catalan derby victory did more than just secure three points. It may also have marked a turning point in the international future of Joan Garcia.
After his heroic performance against Espanyol in an extremely hostile environment, SPORT reports that the Barça goalkeeper is now firmly on Spain’s radar ahead of the March international break.
Spain are not short of elite goalkeepers, and head coach Luis de la Fuente has so far maintained a clear hierarchy.
Unai Simon currently sits at the top of the pecking order, with David Raya and Alex Remiro completing a trio that has provided balance and continuity for La Roja.
Until now, Joan Garcia had remained outside that circle. However, his recent performances have forced a rethink.
According to the aforementioned outlet, De la Fuente will be closely monitoring the Spanish Super Cup semi-final involving Barcelona and Athletic Club, a match that could prove decisive in shaping the next squad list.
Internally, there is a growing debate within the RFEF. Those with access to decision-making channels suggest that De la Fuente has been reluctant to disrupt the existing balance within the goalkeeping group.

At the same time, there is an increasing awareness that continuing to overlook Garcia could ultimately work against the coach himself.
The idea is taking shape as Garcia is expected to receive his first call-up during the next international window, when Spain are scheduled to face Argentina in the Finalissima on March 27, 2026.
Barring any last-minute changes unrelated to sporting performance, the Barcelona keeper is set to be included.
The question is no longer whether he deserves to be among Spain’s three selected goalkeepers.
Instead, the debate has shifted towards whether he already belongs among the very best goalkeepers in world football.
With every commanding display, Garcia continues to strengthen Barcelona’s position and now, increasingly, Spain’s.
His rise feels less like a possibility and more like an inevitability.
