Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid has naturally created plenty of conversation, given his Barcelona academy past.

The Chelsea defender came through La Masia’s ranks and went out in search of regular football. He has now become one of the best left-backs in Europe.

Barcelona superstar Pedri was asked about his Spanish teammate’s move to Los Blancos, and he offered a very mature response.

Speaking in an interview with Teledeporte, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo, Pedri wished Cucurella the very best.

He said: “I wish him the best, he is a footballer who deserves to be at a big club because he is a top player, I am happy for him.”

It is not every day that a Barcelona player speaks so openly and positively about someone joining Los Blancos, especially when the player in question came through the Barça system.

A signing with respect attached

Cucurella’s arrival at Madrid has already been treated as a major part of Jose Mourinho’s squad planning.

The left-back position needed clarity, and Madrid have moved to add a player with experience, intensity and a strong competitive edge.

Pedri’s words underline something important: Cucurella is widely respected inside Spanish football.

He may not be the most glamorous Galactico-style signing, but he has built his career through consistency, work rate and personality.

Mourinho’s teams need more than technical quality. They need players who can compete, defend aggressively, understand pressure and accept difficult tactical demands.

Cucurella fits that type of profile. He is energetic, committed and experienced in different football environments.

Those traits should help him adapt quickly and become a fan favourite at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid gain a proven competitor

Pedri calling him “a top player” is no small remark. Even a Barça midfielder recognises Cucurella’s level and believes he deserves to be at a major club.

Of course, once the season starts, sentiment disappears. Cucurella will be judged by Real Madrid’s standards, and Pedri will be keen to get one over him when El Clasico comes around.

He will also face competition from Alvaro Carreras, with Mourinho reportedly wanting both players to fight for the starting left-back role.

That competition should help Real Madrid. Cucurella arrives with status, but not with a guaranteed place. He has to earn it, and that is exactly how things should work at Madrid.

Both Pedri and Cucurella are crucial to their team’s chances at the World Cup and will be hoping to have a good outing for their nation against Uruguay.
