Barcelona are expected to continue pursuing a move for Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, despite Los Colchoneros complaining to FIFA over Barcelona’s conduct. Yet the Argentina international would also green light a move to their greatest rivals.
Los Rojiblancos have made it clear they have no intention of selling Alvarez to Barcelona, but following his comments publicly declaring he wants a move, the Catalan giants are expected to make a second move for him. Barcelona have already had a €100m bid turned down, although this has been disputed by Atletico.
Alvarez commented that he ‘wanted to fulfil a dream‘, a line that many took to mean playing for Barcelona. While the 26-year-old is believed to be prioritising a move to Barcelona, if the opportunity to sign for Real Madrid came up, he would also take it, say Marca. Los Blancos had a €150m bid for Alvarez turned down, and are not expected to make a second offer, but Alvarez would be open to moving across the city.
Atletico are keen to sell Alvarez to Paris Saint-Germain or Arsenal, but so far Alvarez has been reticent to join either. His priority is to join one of the big two in Spain.
Having declared his desire to leave, Alvarez is likely to get a frosty welcome back at Atletico Madrid. It would seem his situation is untenable, but with Atletico determined not to sell him to one of their rivals in Spain, Alvarez may be forced to consider moving outside of Spain. If he does wait it out, he risks spending a further year at the Metropolitano with the home fans on his back. He need only ask Antoine Griezmann what it could be like.
