Spanish giants collide for second time in a week in crunch European quarter-final

Barcelona host Atletico Madrid this evening in a bumper Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Nou Camp. Hansi Flick’s side are looking to record a second victory in seven days over tonight’s opponents, having beaten them in the league over Easter weekend. Diego Simeone’s men were defeated 2-1 at home, with Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski scoring in a comeback win for Barca at the Estadio Metropolitano.

Both sides came through English opposition to reach this stage, with Atleti defeating Tottenham 7-5 in a thrilling two-legged last 16 encounter. The Spaniards thrashed Igor Tudor’s side at home, but were beaten by a - temoprarily - rejuvenated Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as Xavi Simons netted twice in a 3-2 win.

Barca, meanwhile, made light work of Newcastle United, but they needed home advantage to do so, after a tense 1-1 draw at St James’ Park, where Lamine Yamal’s penalty late on saved them from a first-leg defeat.
