Jules Kounde may not have delivered a headline-grabbing performance in France’s 3-1 World Cup victory over Senegal, but the Barcelona defender did enough to strengthen his position in Didier Deschamps’ plans.

The French international entered the tournament looking to rebuild momentum after an inconsistent campaign at Barcelona, where he even found himself losing his starting spot at right-back to Eric Garcia for parts of the season.

Against Senegal, Kounde was far from spectacular, but his overall contribution showed the reliability that continues to earn him the confidence of both club and country.

With France beginning their World Cup campaign on a positive note, the 27-year-old looks set to remain a key figure in the matches ahead.

A look at the numbers

Operating at right-back, Kounde enjoyed plenty of involvement throughout the contest.

The Barcelona defender recorded 80 touches and completed 51 of his 59 passes, finishing the match with an impressive 86% passing accuracy.

His distribution was particularly secure in his own half, where he misplaced just one pass all game.

While his long-range passing was less effective, completing only one of six attempts, his overall contribution in possession remained positive.

One of the most encouraging aspects of his performance was his willingness to get forward. 

Kounde made 18 runs during the match, which showed his active role in France’s attacking phases and his growing comfort in the full-back position.

His heat map reflected that balance, showing almost equal involvement in both halves of the pitch as he regularly supported attacks while maintaining his defensive responsibilities.

Defensive numbers show improvement

Like France themselves, Kounde appeared to grow into the match.

The defender endured a shaky opening period and was involved in a few dangerous turnovers that briefly put his team under pressure. 

However, he recovered well and produced a much stronger display as the game progressed.

Defensively, he won three of his four tackles and came out on top in four of five ground duels. 

His aerial success rate was less convincing, winning only one of five aerial contests, but overall, he remained effective when called upon.

Lastly, Kounde also contributed four clearances and finished the game with eight defensive actions, underlining his importance in helping France secure their opening victory.

While it was not a flawless display, it was certainly a dependable one.
