Barcelona’s Champions League campaign has been filled with attacking promise, but beneath the surface lies a concern that refuses to go away.
Despite finishing within the direct qualifying spots for the knockout rounds, the Blaugrana have yet to keep a single clean sheet in the competition.
Nine matches into their European journey, Barcelona have conceded 15 goals.
It is a boon that the team continues to produce in attack, but their inability to shut games down defensively remains an unresolved issue.
Looking at the numbers, Joan Garcia, the first-choice keeper, has not managed to keep a clean sheet in his six outings.
Similarly, Wojciech Szczesny has also been unable to prevent goals in all of his outings, including games against Paris Saint-Germain, Olympiacos, and Club Brugge.
What makes the situation more puzzling is the contrast with Garcia’s performances outside the Champions League.

Across domestic competitions, the goalkeeper has shown remarkable consistency, registering 14 clean sheets in 34 appearances.
This sharp difference suggests that the problem is less about the goalkeeper and more about how Barcelona are managing defensive transitions in Europe.
The intensity, pace, and quality of opposition in the Champions League appear to be exposing gaps that are otherwise controlled in domestic competitions.
Now, as Barcelona prepare to face Newcastle United in the second leg of the round of 16, the importance of addressing this issue cannot be overstated.
Given the 1-1 scoreline from the first leg, keeping a clean sheet would give Garcia a much-needed confidence considering his lack of experience in European competitions..
More importantly, it would also take off some steam from a relatively younger defence.
