Sunderland assistant head coach Alessandro Barcherini offered a grounded reaction to the club’s dramatic Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle. In a LinkedIn post he said results are seen but the work is not. Joy after victory fades to relief then preparation for the next game. He loved this win, but his joy lies in the work and he urged supporters to enjoy it.
Anthony Gordon put the hosts ahead early. Chemsdine Talbi levelled before Brian Brobbey struck in the 90th minute at St James’s Park, completing Sunderland’s first league double over Newcastle since 2014-15.
The measured message reflected the relentlessness of Premier League life and the mentality needed to sustain progress.
The result extended a striking pattern in the fixture. Newcastle are still without a home league victory in this derby since 2010 and remain winless in league meetings anywhere since 2011.
Brobbey’s late finish also saw Sunderland move above their rivals in the Premier League table and leapfrog them in the all-time Tyne-Wear derby wins list, reinforcing a sense of resurgence on Wearside.
