Barnes at the double as Newcastle defeat Mourinho's Benfica

José Mourinho once again had an unhappy return to England as his Benfica fell to a 3-0 defeat away to Newcastle United.

The Magpies took the lead with just over half an hour gone. The home side took advantage of Benfica's poor attempt to play out from the back.

Jacob Murphy picked up the ball from the right and played in a low ball across the face of goal where Anthony Gordon was on hand to apply the finishing touch.

It took until the second half for Newcastle to put the tie to bed, after Benfica had survived a potential penalty for a pull on Bruno Guimarães that VAR had decided not to scrutinise any further.

The goal came in the 70th minute through an incredible long throw by Nick Pope that set Harvey Barnes away. There was still plenty for the forward to do but he managed to keep his calm and slot the ball into the corner to make it 2-0.

If that was about as route one as you can get, Newcastle's third was silky football as Nick Woltemade and Gordon linked up beautifully with the latter threading a ball through for Barnes to seal the win in the 83rd minute.

That result means it's now two wins and one defeat in the Champions League for Eddie Howe's side who bounced back well after the weekend's loss to Brighton with Fulham next to visit St James' Park.
