Harvey Barnes is confident that Newcastle can beat Barcelona in Spain and secure a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Barnes thought he had secured Newcastle a 1-0 lead to head to Catalonia on Tuesday, after turning in Jacob Murphy’s cross on 86 minutes.
It was a moment the Magpies had deserved, having carved out the better chances, including another effort from Barnes that hit the post.
However, Malick Thiaw’s foul on Dani Olmo in stoppage time handed the visitors a penalty, which Lamine Yamal converted.
Despite that setback, Barnes believes Eddie Howe’s team are capable of securing the result required to progress in the return.
“Of course, we’re disappointed with the way the game’s ended but we’ve got to take the positives from the game,” he said.
“I thought we played really well and controlled the game in a lot of it. They’re a dangerous team with dangerous players and we kept them quiet for long periods of the game.
“We created chances ourselves, got ourselves ahead in the game and for 93-94 minutes, we were winning the tie. We’re level and it’s all to play for next week so it’s an exciting tie.
“It’s just a kick in the teeth (the equaliser) because I thought, not just the result but the performance deserved better for the way we played.
“We deserved to be going there next week with a one-goal lead. We haven’t, that’s football, and you’ve got to quickly forget about that, reset and go there with the mindset of winning and getting through the tie.
“That’s the self-belief we have within the squad and that’s exactly what we’ll do next week.”
