There were five changes to the line-up from the team that lost at home against Millwall. Reggie Rose, Conor McManus, Isaiah Powis, Naeem Giscombe and Ethan Laidlaw were all drafted into the side from the start.
It was an even contest in the opening moments of the game as both sides enjoyed spells of possession.
The best chance of the first ten minutes fell to Andre Grey who pounced onto a good lay-off from Michel Boni but the midfielder's caressed effort only just went over the bar.
On 30 minutes, the deadlock was broken and it came through Giscombe as he collected a neat pass from McManus and without breaking his stride, he curled a perfect shot into the top corner of the net.
Luke Alker had a chance to draw his team level as he was played through on goal but Rose did enough to affect the attacker as he failed to make meaningful contact with the ball.
There were chances in quick succession for Saunders' side which should have doubled the lead. Boni was first as he flashed a shot which only just went past the post.
Luka Bentt was next to try his luck, as great team play saw the midfielder take a shot in the box which again beat the keeper but had too much power on it as it went over the bar.
Boni then had another opportunity to get on the scoresheet in the first period but the striker's effort was blocked by a last-ditch tackle from Tom Senior.

The Bees were in full control of the contest and Boni had yet another chance to make the lead comfortable as the striker did well to create the space for the shot but it whistled past the post.
Against the run of play, the home side were awarded a penalty for a push in the box from a corner. Fabio Jalo stepped up to take the penalty and scored.
It was still Brentford who looked the more likely to win the game and on 70 minutes, second-half substitute, Bobb-Semple was in the right place to tap into the net following a save from a Boni header.
The away side were able to see out the game and secure the three points.
The victory means that Saunders' side return to winning ways and continue to charge up the table in the PDL.
Brentford turn their attentions to Cardiff City in another away trip for their next game on Tuesday 27 January.
