Vasco midfielder Barros said in a post that his family received threats after Sunday’s Campeonato Carioca semi-final against Fluminense, and he apologised for his errors.
He faced criticism after conceding two penalties in the 1-1 draw at the Maracanã. The first came in the opening minute when he felled Canobbio in the area, and Renê missed from the spot.
In the closing stages, a handball after a Jemmes deflection from a Ganso cross led VAR to award Fluminense a second penalty. Fluminense’s number 10 converted, sending Léo Jardim the wrong way to level. The draw confirmed Vasco’s exit after a 1-0 first-leg defeat at Nilton Santos last week.
He accepts criticism, demands and boos as part of the game, but considers threats towards relatives unacceptable. His view was that family do not take the field and should not live in fear because of any result.
Barros described wearing Vasco’s shirt as a responsibility he embraces and admitted he fell short on Sunday, feeling the weight of each error. He asked that no abuse or threats be directed at anyone, particularly his loved ones. He vowed to keep working to respond and honour the club’s history.
