The club said in a statement that Carles Martínez Novell has been appointed as Bayer Leverkusen’s new head coach, replacing Kasper Hjulmand.
The 42-year-old Spaniard has signed a two-year deal and arrives from Toulouse after three years, joining on a free.
Shareholders’ committee chairman Werner Wenning thanked Hjulmand for his work over the past season, noting runs to the DFB-Pokal semi-finals and the UEFA Champions League round of 16, while acknowledging targets were not fully met. He said the club are pleased to have secured Martínez, described as an ambitious, modern coach.
Managing director for sport Simon Rolfes said they carefully assessed who best fits the club’s next phase. He highlighted Martínez’s development of young players at Toulouse, forging an internationally diverse squad into a strong unit, and experience with FC Barcelona’s youth academy.
Rolfes added that Martínez has clear principles and a modern playing philosophy, and that they are convinced he can set the right direction for the club’s sporting future.
