Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund lock horns in a crucial Bundesliga showdown on Saturday at the BayArena.
The clash represents a meeting between two of Germany’s biggest clubs as they look to finish inside the top four and qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Bayer Leverkusen will be without several key players for this significant fixture as they continue to manage a stretched injury list. Lucas Vázquez was sidelined with various muscle and hamstring injuries and is expected to return in late November. Additionally, long-term absentee Exequiel Palacios is ruled out until mid-January following a groin injury.
Ezequiel Fernández is also unavailable due to a knee ligament injury. Arthur, Janis Blaswich, and Axel Tape Kobrissa are all sidelined for this match as well.
Niko Kovač will have a near fully-fit squad at his disposal for this crucial clash. The Croatian confirmed at his pre-match press conference: “Everyone came through the match unharmed. Süle remains unavailable. Everyone else is involved.” Niklas Süle continues to struggle with a toe injury that has kept him sidelined for several weeks.
Maximilian Beier, who missed the Villarreal match due to muscular problems, was set to participate in Friday’s training session, with a late decision to be made on his availability. “Maxi Beier will take part in the final training session with the team today. After that we’ll know whether he can play,” Kovač confirmed.
Things have started to click into gear for Leverkusen in recent weeks. Since the 3-0 defeat at Bayern Munich on Matchday 9, Hjulmand’s men have strung together four consecutive victories. They defeated Benfica 1-0 away, thrashed Heidenheim 6-0 at home, won 3-1 at Wolfsburg, and stunned Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad.
Dortmund have endured a mixed spell in the Bundesliga recently, with late heartbreak costing them in consecutive fixtures. A 97th-minute equaliser from Hamburger SV stole a point just before the international break, while Deniz Undav’s hat-trick in the 91st minute secured a 3-3 draw for Stuttgart at Signal Iduna Park last week.
However, Tuesday’s 4-0 demolition of Villarreal was just what Kovač’s side needed. Serhou Guirassy netted a brace, Karim Adeyemi added a third, and Daniel Svensson headed home in stoppage time to end their three-match winless run.
