Bayern Munich secured their place in the knockout rounds of the Champions League after beating Union Saint-Gilloise 2-0 on Wednesday night at the Allianz Arena.

Harry Kane scored twice and missed a penalty as Bayern sealed all three points after an insipid first-half display.

Bayern maintained their impeccable record at home against Belgian sides, and picked up their 250th win in the Champions League; only Real Madrid have won more than them.

Since the winter break, Bayern have found another gear in their game and have won four games in a row across all competitions.

With this win, Bayern stay second in the Champions League table with 18 points, three behind Arsenal, who have won all their games so far.

Vincent Kompany made a few changes to the squad from the previous game. Michael Olise, Raphael Guerreiro and Joshua Kimmich came into the side, with Kim Min-jae starting in place of Dayot Upamecano, who missed out due to illness.

Bayern made a bright start, and Harry Kane nearly scored in the opening two minutes, but Scherpen made a smart save.

After that, the home side dominated possession, but they missed that spark in the final third and couldn’t create enough clear-cut chances.

In fact, the best chance of the half fell to the visitors, after Promise David glanced his header from point-blank range on target, but Manuel Neuer produced a top-class save to deny him.

Christian Falk predicted a comfortable win for the home side ahead of the game, but Bayern were kept frustrated after a goalless draw in the first half.

The German giants shifted gear in the second half, as they have done in most of their games this season, and scored the opening goal through Harry Kane.

The England striker has been in phenomenal form this season, and he rose high inside the box to divert his header into the net from a corner.

Moments later, Kane was fouled in the box, and Bayern were awarded a penalty. Harry Kane stepped up to make it 2-0, his 34th goal of the season.

The momentum, however, was disrupted after Kim Min-jae picked up a red card, and Bayern mainly focused on controlling possession with a man down.

Michael Olise’s shot hit the arms of Van de Perre, and after a delayed VAR check, the referee pointed to the spot in the 78th minute. Kane stepped up, but he managed to hit the woodwork.

Olise was presented a glorious opportunity for Luis Diaz to increase the lead, but he missed from a narrow range, much to everyone’s surprise.
