Real Madrid’s long-term defensive planning has suffered a significant setback, with fresh developments emerging around one of their most closely followed targets.
According to journalist Santi Aouna, Dayot Upamecano and Bayern Munich are now very close to finalising a contract extension, having already agreed on almost every major aspect of the deal.
For months, Upamecano’s contractual situation has been carefully monitored by Real Madrid.
The French centre-back was identified as a prime target for the summer of 2026, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding his future in Munich and the belief that Madrid could exploit a favourable market opportunity.
Internally, Los Blancos had placed him at the top of their defensive shortlist and were even confident enough to believe that a verbal understanding had been reached.
However, Bayern have refused to let the situation slip away. While negotiations between the German club and the player were not always smooth, the Bavarians remained convinced they could convince their defender to stay.
That persistence now appears to be paying off.

According to the report, Bayern and Upamecano have already reached an agreement on all financial terms of the new contract and the only unresolved detail concerns the timing of a release clause.
Bayern want the clause to come into effect from next summer, ensuring they retain control over the player in the short term.
Upamecano, on the other hand, is pushing for the clause to be valid as early as the summer of 2026, giving him greater freedom over his future.
This detail is crucial because interest remains strong. Both Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are prepared to meet the player’s expectations should the door open.
Madrid, in particular, had hoped to position themselves perfectly ahead of 2026, taking advantage of any contractual leverage.
The latest progress made by Bayern significantly complicates that plan. With most issues resolved, the German club are now firmly back in control of the situation. While nothing is signed yet, the balance has shifted clearly in their favour.
