Dayot Upamecano has been one of the most widely linked names to Real Madrid over the past week, especially after it suddenly came to light that Los Blancos had reached a verbal agreement with the player.

Despite the initial noise, however, it was soon clarified that no such agreement was in existence and that, in fact, the player had not decided his future yet.

Bayern Munich, thus, are pushing for a renewal and talks are underway to agree on the duration of the contract and the wage structure. Given that his deal runs out next summer, however, Real Madrid are undoubtedly interested.

Bayern president speaks

In a recent interview, the president of Bayern Munich Herbert Hainer was asked about Upamecano’s situation in particular and how he saw the saga unfolding.

He revealed that the club are currently in negotiations with the player over a new contract, as relayed by the media over the past few weeks.

“We are on it, talking to Upamecano,” he began.

Elaborating on what made him believe the player would renew his deal, the administrator named the player’s comfort to be the single biggest reason.

“I think he feels at ease in Munich. For him, it is, of course, an important decision. In principle, he really likes being in Bayern.”

Finally, Hainer was asked if he was optimistic about Upamecano staying in Germany and how sure he was that his club could secure the renewal, to which he said,

“We would like to keep him. I am moderately optimistic.”

So far this season, Upamecano has been a regular starter for Bayern Munich alongside Jonathan Tah and has led the defence. He has started eight league games and four UEFA Champions League games this season and has overseen three clean sheets in the process.
