According to Fabrizio Romano, the transfer saga surrounding Nico Williams is heating up, and Barcelona now hold the key.
The Athletic Club winger has made it clear that he wants to play for Barcelona, and that desire has been firmly communicated to all parties involved.
Interestingly, despite the player’s commitment, the situation is far from resolved. Why? Because the €62 million release clause can only be activated in a single payment. And that’s where things get complicated for Barcelona.
While Nico is reportedly even ready to reduce his salary demands to make the move possible, Barça’s financial limitations remain a significant hurdle.
Barcelona need to find a solution that allows them to trigger the release clause either by generating the funds through sales or negotiating a payment structure acceptable to Athletic Club.

This is precisely why Bayern Munich are not stepping away. The German giants have already held two meetings with Nico’s agents and plan to remain in constant contact.
Having already sold Leroy Sane and with Thomas Muller set to depart, Bayern are in the market for a new winger and see Nico Williams as a top priority.
Bayern also have a clear advantage in this race in terms of finances. Unlike Barcelona, they can meet the release clause in full and offer higher wages.
Yet, Nico’s stance has not moved. His heart is set on Barcelona. That willingness to reduce his salary highlights just how determined he is to wear the Blaugrana shirt.
However, Barcelona must act. The club’s sporting and financial departments need to work in harmony to offload players, clear salary space, and put together the resources needed to get the deal done before Bayern can.
