It looks as if the route to signing Julian Alvarez for Barcelona will be something of a labyrinth, and it has led to many asking what the other options are for the Catalan side. They have also been linked to Chelsea forward Joao Pedro and Harry Kane, but neither of those deals look simple either.
Atletico Madrid have been vehement that they will not sell Alvarez to Barcelona, and even if they were willing, it seems negotiations will start at €150m. Meanwhile Chelsea have been clear that they have no desire to sell back-up plan Joao Pedro under any circumstances, leaving Barcelona short of options to replace Robert Lewandowski. They have of course signed Anthony Gordon, who can play through the middle too.
One of the names that Barcelona had circled earlier in the year is Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane. The veteran England international is one of the few players of similar calibre to Lewandowski, but Christian Falk has told Bayern Insider that they will not consider selling Kane. Recent days have seen talk that Barcelona could turn to Kane in the event they cannot sign Alvarez, and could make an €80m bid for him. Yet Kane is scheduled for contract talks with Bayern in the coming months, and they will look to extend his deal.
The Blaugrana have also reportedly enquired about some more modest veteran number nines too, including RCD Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi and Atletico Madrid’s Alexander Sorloth. The latter finished second in the Pichichi race two years ago with Villarreal, while Muriqi was only bettered by Kylian Mbappe this year, scoring 23 times in La Liga. Neither would fill the boots of Lewandowski, or provide the quality of Kane, but it could provide an alternative to Flick if he does use Gordon through the middle.
