On Tuesday night, Bayern Munich took care of business at the Bay Arena when they defeated Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 clash.
With a commanding three-goal advantage from the first leg played at the Allianz Arena a week ago, Bayern were the firm favourites to advance to the competition's quarter-final stage. The Bavarian giants delivered an excellent team performance and seldom looked troubled, coming away from Leverkusen with a well-earned 2-0 victory and clinching the tie 5-0 on aggregate. Let’s look at three players who shone the brightest for Bayern at the Bay Arena.
Harry Kane continued from where he left off in the first leg with, arguably, a man-of-the match performance at the Bay Arena. It was another masterful display of economic efficiency from the England Captain on Tuesday night.
In the first leg, Kane had 30 touches of the ball over 90 minutes but still managed to score a brace. On Tuesday, the 31-year-old striker scored his team’s first goal and set up the second despite having just 29 touches during his 85-minute stay on the pitch.
For the first goal, in minute 52, Kane showed great concentration to get onto the end of a lofted free-kick from Joshua Kimmich, into a crowded penalty area, before excellently controlling the ball and finishing from inside the six-yard box. Nineteen minutes later, Kane turned provider when, from the edge of the right side of the box, he picked out Alphonso Davies, who had ghosted into the box from the left flank to make it 2-0 on the night.
Once again, Kane superbly led the line for Bayern despite being closely marked and made the most of the limited number of touches that he got. Apart from his heroics in the opposition’s box, he contributed to his team's cause in defense with a clearance, two interceptions, and three recoveries. He also won five of his eight contested ground duels.
