After his strong performance against Leverkusen, Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich spoke openly about his future. The veteran can imagine staying with the record champions for another year

The afternoon in Leverkusen was not only a special moment for Sven Ulreich in sporting terms. After FC Bayern’s 1:1 draw with the Werkself, the 37-year-old also spoke openly about his future – and made people sit up and take notice

His contract in Munich expires in the summer, but Ulreich clearly signalled that he can imagine staying on. „I can well imagine doing another year,“ explained the goalkeeper after the game. The role in the goalkeeping team suits him, and he continues to enjoy the job

However, the decision is not entirely up to the keeper. Ulreich knows that the club management will ultimately decide his future: „It’s not my decision alone,“ he clarified, referring to those responsible at the record champions

This refers in particular to sporting director Max Eberl, who is responsible for squad planning. There have not yet been any concrete talks about a possible contract extension. Nevertheless, the veteran’s clear statement shows that should the club be interested, Ulreich would be prepared to extend his long Bayern career by another chapter

Veteran impressed against Leverkusen

His strong performance in Leverkusen is one of the reasons why the club are likely to keep his name on their radar. Ulreich stepped in at short notice because both regular goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and stand-in keeper Jonas Urbig were out injured. It was the experienced goalkeeper’s first competitive match appearance in an incredible 539 days. But there was hardly any sign of a lack of match practice. Ulreich defused several dangerous Leverkusen shots and kept Munich in the game with strong saves

The reward followed after the final whistle – and came from all sides. Team-mates, coaching staff and fans celebrated the veteran for his performance. The sporting management was also impressed. Especially in difficult moments, Ulreich can always be relied upon, emphasized the officials

His experience, his professionalism and his role in the team structure continue to make him valuable to the club. If there are changes in the goalkeeper position in the summer, this factor could be decisive. The game in Leverkusen certainly showed that Ulreich is far from ready to be just a spectator

Injury setback for Ulreich

Ulreich could have continued to demonstrate his skills in the coming weeks, but during his comeback against Leverkusen, the keeper suffered a torn muscle bundle in his right adductor

The injury is not only a setback from Ulreich’s individual point of view: with Jonas Urbig (concussion) and Manuel Neuer (torn muscle fibre) also currently missing, a 16-year-old could suddenly be standing between the posts against Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday: Leonard Prescott

The young keeper has already been on the substitutes‘ bench for the first leg against Bergamo and the Bundesliga clash in Leverkusen.
