It has been announced that Bayern Munich will be financially compensated by FIFA for the injury to Alphonso Davies as part of the FIFA Club Protection Programme.

The Bavarian club confirmed the news this afternoon but the official amount of this compensation is yet to be determined.

Following Davies’s cruciate ligament rupture on international duty in March, Bayern held a detailed discussion with representatives of the Canadian Soccer Association (Canada Soccer).

The circumstances surrounding the player’s serious injury while representing Canada in their 2-1 win over the United States was the topic of discussion.

At a meeting in Munich, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen made it clear that the conduct and actions of the Canadian association did not entirely fulfil the duty to protect Davies.

Like all other national associations, Canada Soccer is obliged to prioritise the health of its players whilst on international duty.

Dreesen announced he will intensify contact with the national associations of contracted Bayern players in order to emphasise even more strongly the need to fulfil protection obligations in the event of injury.
