Begoña Carrasco has welcomed the return of top-level international football to Castellón as Spain meet Iceland this evening at SkyFi Castalia in a qualifier for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the Castellón mayor attended a lunchtime reception organised by the Spanish federation before the match, thanking it for again selecting the city after last month’s Spanish Super Cup was staged there.
She said it was a source of pride that the federation had renewed its trust in Castellón, adding that sustained work and a push for sports tourism are bearing fruit by consolidating the city as a venue for major events.
She also noted that Castellón is set to host close to 200 sporting events across the year, reflecting the administration’s strategy of using sport as an economic, tourism and social driver.
Carrasco underlined support for women’s sport and equality, saying the city aims to be a reference point in promoting women’s sport. Hosting top-tier women’s competitions, she added, demonstrates that commitment and helps provide role models and opportunities for younger girls.
She was joined by sports councillor Maica Hurtado at the institutional event, where gifts were exchanged. The city council presented a ceramic gaiata, while the Icelandic delegation offered a shirt and a plaque.
