Fabrizio Romano is first to the story, then Ben Jacobs comes in a little later with a little more detail.

That’s how this summer has tended to go, and this afternoon we have a perfect example from the Carney Chukwuemeka saga that looks to finally be coming to a conclusion after a long slow summer of back and forth talks.

Romano drops initial bomb over €25m transfer

Romano this morning declared the deal on – saying the midfielder with travel to Germany for his medical with Borussia Dortmund tomorrow.

The Italian insider called it a €25m fee, but one with also had add ons and a “heavy” sell on fee that could mean more cash incoming if he moves on from the German side.

That’s an increase from the €20m that was being talked about not long ago, which seemed to be what Dortmund wanted to pay. Chelsea caved on their demands of €30m from earlier in the summer, and the two sides met in the middle in the end.

But Ben Jacobs wasn’t far behind with some tweaks to Romano’s information from his own sources at the club.

Correction important as it tips Chelsea into decent profit

Ben Jacobs on Carney Chukwuemeka and a £24m fee.

It’s a small correction but an important one. £24m is closer to €28m, meaning a €3m gap.

Given we paid £20m for him in 2022 and he’s struggled for game time since thanks to injury, this is a decent profit when you take into account the “add ons” and “heavy sell on” that Romano mentions.

We wish Carney all the best – if he can stay fit we can see him really dominating in the Bundesliga’s wide open spaces. That sell on could be worth quite a bit in a Premier League return a few years down the line if he shines for Dortmund.
