Benfica could reverse course on Andreas Schjelderup’s January exit as the transfer landscape changes. According to Glorioso 1904, the Rui Costa-led board may decide not to let the Norwegian international leave.

There are new factors that could keep Schjelderup in the squad under José Mourinho. Despite strong interest, most recently from Club Brugge, the winger could yet be valuable in the second half of the season.

With the move for André Luiz said to be close to collapsing and Rafa Silva the only addition arriving at Luz, the club are weighing up retaining the 21-year-old to ensure depth out wide. A failure to reach the Champions League play-off would also substantially reduce funds to attack the market.

A highly positive display in Vila do Conde is understood to have helped restore Mourinho’s confidence in the player. The number 21 should keep his place in the starting line-up for the Champions League meeting with Juventus.

This season Schjelderup, valued at 14 million euros, has played 23 matches for Benfica: 12 in Liga Portugal Betclic, six in the Champions League, four in the Taça de Portugal and one in the Taça da Liga. Across 1,047 minutes he has scored two goals and supplied three assists.
