Benfica’s exit at Estádio do Dragão on Wednesday has seen the club equal its longest wait for the Taça de Portugal, nine seasons without the trophy. Elimination by Porto matched the drought from 2004/05 to 2012/13.

According to Glorioso 1904, the run jars with Benfica’s standing in the competition and has renewed criticism among supporters and pundits.

Benfica last won the cup in 2016/17 under Rui Vitória, beating Vitória de Guimarães 2-1 in the Jamor final. They have not returned to Jamor since.

They have reached three finals since, losing to Porto in 2020 and Braga in 2021, both played in Coimbra because of pandemic restrictions. Last season brought another setback, a derby defeat to Sporting after extra time.

Since José Mourinho’s arrival in Portuguese football, he remains without a win against the three main domestic rivals. There have been draws with Porto 0-0 and Sporting 1-1, plus a 2-2 draw and a 1-3 defeat against Sp. Braga, the latter in the Allianz Cup semi-finals.

This latest exit at the Dragão has made for a bleak start to 2026, stripping away another objective. The pressure on the team and the hierarchy has increased at a club used to contesting titles and delivering in decisive moments.
