According to Glorioso 1904, Benfica supporters made themselves heard in Turin despite a UEFA sanction, attending the Juventus match.
The ban covered Benfica’s ticket sales for yesterday’s game, yet some fans travelled and secured seats through less usual means, including purchases made using IP addresses from Spain and France. Others went without tickets, hoping to find one on arrival.
The main concern was being turned away after Juventus warned of uncompromising entry checks at the Allianz Stadium. More than 41,600 spectators were in the stands.
Hours before kick-off, near Benfica’s hotel, two Italian fans, Marco Mancuzo of Inter and Valerio Di Schiena of Milan, waited in the hope of seeing José Mourinho and Rui Costa, who had previously made their mark with those clubs. One Inter supporter even predicted a 3-1 Benfica win.
The match did not follow that script. José Mourinho’s side lost 2-0 away to the Vecchia Signora on matchday seven of the UEFA Champions League league phase, leaving qualification in jeopardy.
To reach the play-off, Benfica must do their part against Real Madrid on 28 January at 20:00 at Estádio da Luz, which closes the league phase, and hope several rivals do not win.
