Benfica have launched an internal investigation after footage appeared of two home supporters making alleged racist gestures towards Vinícius Júnior during the 1-0 Champions League play-off first leg at the Estádio da Luz.

According to Glorioso 1904, the club acted immediately once the videos circulated on social media and has identified the two young individuals involved, with the matter now being assessed internally.

The night had already been ignited by a confrontation between Gianluca Prestianni and Vinícius Júnior on the pitch, after which the images from the stands sparked strong controversy. Both clubs have expressed full willingness to cooperate with UEFA’s investigation into the alleged incidents.

Real Madrid won 1-0, Vinícius Júnior scoring the only goal to give the Spanish side the advantage in the tie.

The second leg is scheduled for Wednesday, 25 February, at the Estádio Santiago Bernabéu.

Real Madrid will be without José Mourinho on the bench after he was dismissed in the closing stages at the Luz following fierce criticism of French referee François Letexier.
