Benfica are on alert after Gonçalo Oliveira suffered a nasty-looking injury in Benfica B’s 2-0 defeat to Porto B. He was taken to hospital for assessment.

According to Record, it happened in stoppage time on the final day of Liga Portugal Meu Super. The defender received treatment on the pitch and was helped by two members of Benfica’s medical staff to the bench.

Coach Nélson Veríssimo said Oliveira’s ankle is badly swollen, he will be reassessed and they hope it is not serious.

The nature of the problem is currently unknown, with clarification expected after tests in the coming hours. The Portugal under-21 international, 19, is regarded as one of the academy’s latest prospects and has yet to debut for the senior side.

This season Oliveira has made 33 appearances for Benfica, 24 in Liga Portugal Meu Super and nine in the UEFA Youth League.

He has played 2,882 minutes, scoring four goals and supplying two assists, and is valued at two million euros.
