Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva has turned attention away from the field when issuing the latest praise on newly-signed forward Antoine Semenyo.
While Semenyo’s impact has already been measured in goals and assists, there is a growing sense within the squad that his influence stretches far beyond his attacking output, with Pep Guardiola consistently stressing the importance of character when recruiting players.
The Ghanaian international has enjoyed a remarkable start to life in sky blue, immediately announcing himself with a goal and an assist on his debut in the FA Cup third round demolition of Exeter, and following that with a decisive contribution in the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg victory over Newcastle.
City’s 2-0 win at St James’ Park again showcased Semenyo’s composure in high-pressure moments and having converted his chance to open the scoring, he later had a second effort ruled out. Alongside Rayan Cherki’s late strike, City now carry a commanding advantage back to the Etihad Stadium ahead of the second leg.
There has also been synergy with recent comments from Pep Guardiola, who has praised Semenyo’s mentality, enthusiasm, and hunger to succeed at the highest level. The manager has spoken about how the forward’s passion and desire to embrace Champions League football for the first time in his career can be a powerful asset for the group.
And speaking to television broadcasters after City’s 0-2 win over Newcastle on Tuesday night, Bernardo Silva was keen to showcase his delight at the impact of Antoine Semenyo since arriving at the Etihad Stadium from Bournemouth.
“He looks not just a very good player, but a very good guy which helps, which fits right into the team,” said the Portugal international.
“He’s a fantastic guy who wants to play collectively, wants to help us, wants to have fun, and we’re delighted with the way he’s started.
“Hopefully he can keep going.”
If Antoine Semenyo continues to combine his on-pitch quality with the off-pitch traits highlighted by the club’s captain, he could quickly establish himself as a core part of Pep Guardiola’s attacking rotation.
With key fixtures across domestic and European competitions on the horizon, starting with the weekend’s clash away to Manchester United in the Premier League, his collective mindset may prove just as valuable as his finishing ability.
For City fans, the early signs suggest the club may have secured not only a forward capable of decisive moments, but also a character who strengthens the dressing room.
