At the Allianz Stadium Juventus Women First Team’s final match of the Women's Serie A Poule Scudetto ended in 0-1 defeat to Inter, as Haley Bugeja's goal in the second half was the difference between the two sides. All the attention of the evening, however, was on Sara Gama as she lifted the Serie A trophy to the sky after a splendid league campaign for the Bianconere.
Sara Gama was the focus of the attention at the beginning of the match: as the Bianconere captain took to the pitch for the 154th time in a Juventus women's shirt, and she was greeted by a guard of honour from her teammates and opponents in the third minute, before leaving the pitch for the last time to warm applause from the fans present at the Allianz Stadium. After saying goodbye to the black and white captain, attention turned to the match itself, and Lisa Boattin and Cristiana Girelli were the first two to go in search of the opening goal but were unable to cause many problems for the Nerrazurre goalkeeper. In the closing stages of the first half it was Inter who created the best chances of the match, first through Elisa Polli and then Ivana Andres Sanz, but Pauline Peyraud-Magnin was alert to the danger and was able to keep the scores level heading into the break at the Allianz Stadium.
At the start of the second half it was Henrietta Csiszar who came close to scoring with a shot across goal that was tipped onto the post by the newly introduced Alessia Capelletti. Coach Massimiliano Canzi's team also posed a threat going forward through another substitute: Amalie Vangsgaard got in behind before turning smartly and picking out Girelli, whose effort looked destined for goal before being denied by the Inter keeper. In the 76th minute the deadlock was broken by Bugeja’s finish from the middle of the penalty area that made it 0-1 to Inter. The Bianconere reacted immediately with Vangsgaard who this time went alone, beating two defenders and then striking goalwards, but Cecilia Runarsdottir was on hand to deny her. The keeper was nearly called into action once again shortly afterwards when Emma Stolen Godo timed her run well before connecting with a header from a good position, but she was unable to find the target. In the closing stages it was again Vangsgaard who came close with a left-footed drive, dribbling back inside the penalty area before her effort was parried away by Runarsdottir. At the final whistle, however, there were only two thoughts: the homage to Sara Gama and the Scudetto trophy that was raised to the sky at the Allianz Stadium by the Italian champions.
“There are so many emotions, I wanted to hug all the girls. I took some time to say goodbye in the best possible way. As a child I thought about having fun, I didn't think I could have this career. Without the passion and the desire to have fun when you are a child, nothing comes of it, that is fundamental. I have had so many good moments in my career, I couldn't end it in a better way than I did this year after winning a league title.”
“I am honoured to have been the coach in charge of Sara Gama's final farewell. I came into this world (of women’s football) this year and Sara for me is the emblem of women's football. I was privileged to coach her, and I will carry that with me forever. Today we didn't play a good first half, losing is never pleasing even though today we knew the atmosphere was celebratory. We know what to work on ahead of the Coppa Italia final, it's a very important trophy that was part of our objectives at the start of the season.”
“The embrace with Sara was a privileged moment. Sara has guided us every day, she will continue to do so, and she deserves everything that there has been today. What she has done I think no one else will ever be able to do. Today we have allowed ourselves this celebration, there is a bit of bitterness about today's result but after we won the league we immediately told ourselves that the season was not over. We are totally focused on the Coppa Italia final. This team never ceases to amaze me and it has helped me so much. This is a Scudetto for the people who have made the difference.”
