Juventus Women First Team, fresh from the home success against AC Milan that saw the Bianconere lift their sixth Scudetto in eight years since the team’s creation, fell to a 3-1 away defeat against Fiorentina in the penultimate match of the Poule Scudetto.

THE MATCH REPORT

The Italian champions visited Fiorentina in the penultimate match of the Poule Scudetto, with the league title already secured by Juventus Women with two matches to spare. The newly crowned champions started the match slowly at the Viola Park, with the hosts hitting the crossbar after four minutes with a shot by Agnese Bonfantini, before the Bianconere threatened through Viola Calligaris: whose attempt from long distance flew wide of the target.

Fiorentina looked dangerous and took the lead after 9 minutes through Madelen Janogy who forced Lysianne Proulx into saving her initial effort behind for a corner, before rising highest from the resulting set-piece to find the back of the net.

Juventus tried to re-group after falling behind, but were unable to find a way to cause problems for the Fiorentina defence, with the hosts instead doubling their lead midway through the first half: Sofie Bredgaard forced Lindsey Thomas to commit to the tackle, and the defender was unable to get a touch on the ball, with referee Mattia Ubaldi having no doubts in awarding a penalty, which was then dispatched with ease by Emma Severini.

It was difficult to deal with going two behind, but Juventus tried to get back on track especially through some great play from Emma Stolen Godo, who did well to dispossess the Fiorentina defence and almost catch Francesca Durante off guard with a sweetly struck chip.

A complicated first half, which thus came to an end with Fiorentina leading 2-0.

In the second half, the Bianconere came out determined to level the scoreline and their attacks became more aggressive and dangerous: the first attempt of the second half came in the 53rd minute, again through Stolen Godo who connected with Amalie Vangsgaard's pass to divert an effort goalwards, but she was unable to generate sufficient power behind the shot and Durante was able to deal with it.

Two minutes later it was Hanna Bennison's turn, as she struck a shot from distance that the home side’s goalkeeper was once again on hand to save. The big chance for the visitors, however, came on the 59th minute through Emma Kullberg who drove forward unopposed before shooting from the edge of the area, but her effort crashed against the crossbar.

Durante, Fiorentina's goalkeeper, became increasingly involved in the match, doing well to deal with the Bianconere’s efforts; especially to deny Cristiana Girelli’s close-range header.

As often happens when chasing the game, Fiorentina went down the other end and scored the third goal in the 82nd minute via Janogy – again with a header from a corner kick.

At that point, not even the changes and the introductions of several substitutes in the second half were enough to get Juve back into the game, with Stolen Godo snatching a late consolation goal from close-range in the first minute of additional time: thus the match ended 3-1 to Fiorentina.

MASSIMILIANO CANZI

“Motivation certainly plays a part, but it took us a long time to get into the match: we didn't approach the challenge badly, but in the first half Fiorentina deserved more than us. In the second half we played well, but we were unable to capitalise on our chances as we would have deserved: in the second 45 minutes we played with a ‘Juventus’ spirit, and I'm happy about this, unlike the first half of the match. Considerations that concern the whole team, regardless of who played and who didn't: the attitude once we returned to the field after half-time had clearly changed on all sides. Now we get ready to face the match at the Allianz Stadium in a fortnight in front of our fans, which will bring our league campaign to an end: we must be good at staying focused and playing the next 90 minutes at our best.”
