Only three clubs have won the Scottish top flight since 1985, and anyone harbouring any hopes of that statistic changing in the not to distant future is usually regarded as not only seriously mistaken, but also totally and utterly delusional. But is that all about to change?

Yes the Jambos have made a decent start, but we are only four games in, and it’s as they say still early doors. Derek McInnes side have been bolstered by some good additions aided by the input of Billionaire investor Tony Bloom, but the brutal reality is that they lack the resources and experience to mount a serious title challenge at this early stage in Bloom’s involvement at Tynecastle and in McInnes’ first season in charge of the Jam Tarts.

It’s very much a case of Deja Vu as everyone was saying the same thing about Aberdeen this time last year after the Dons storming start to the campaign, and I don’t need to explain how that turned out for the Jimmy Thelin’s side in terms of their league placing. They did however show their improvement in a tangible manner by shocking Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final in May.

Hearts and any other side outwith the two Glasgow sides for that matter can shout about how they can challenge for the title, but deep down they know that it’s nothing more than a pipe dream at the moment. Hibs, like both Hearts and Aberdeen have improved considerably and the two Edinburgh sides will have their appetites whetted by the Aberdeen cup final win.

Then we can look at theRangers who have yet to win a match after drawing against Motherwell, Dundee, St Mirren and mist recently Celtic. That’s eight points dropped from 12 and it’s the kind of form that the east coast sides will be thinking offers an opportunity to at least split the big two Glasgow giants this season. That incidentally was the view expressed by Tony Bloom at the start of the campaign.

Celtic has three wins and a draw so far in the campaign and crucially has won at Pittodrie and got a point at Ibrox. That’s two of the toughest away games out of the way for Brendan Rodgers side. However there is clearly unrest at Celtic Park with the various supporters associations all passing votes of no confidence in the Celtic Board amid unhappiness at the club’s failures in the transfer market and shock Champions League exit to Kairat.

Russell Martin survived theRangers support’s unrest after the 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge ended their Champions League chances. The point against Celtic followed but that results means that they trail both Celtic and Hearts by six points.

With five sides all believing that they are in with a chance this season the Scottish Premiership is unquestionably going to be more competitive. Celtic have won 13 titles in 14 years and Brendan Rodgers will be looking to complete a fifth consecutive win this season before probably calling time on his Celtic career at the end of his three year contract. It’s unlikely that he will stay around to be a maintenance manager after making his position abundantly clear in his first media conference of the season ahead of Celtic’s flag day win over St Mirren.

So while Celtic remain favourites, the big spending theRangers will look for momentum to close the gap and Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen will put up tough opposition throughout the campaign as they work towards closing the gap.

The one thing that’s certain is that there’s never going to be a dull moment in Scottish football. That’s why everyone loves it so much!
