Hibs may offer the player better on-pitch opportunities, although they aren't said to be alone in the chase.
Scottish Premiership side Hibernian want to sign Birmingham City centre-forward Lyndon Dykes before the end of the transfer window.
With all the moves that Blues have made up front this summer, the Australian-born Scotland international seemed like a prime candidate to depart St. Andrew's at some point this summer.
It came as a surprise when Alfie May left for Huddersfield Town before Dykes was even mentioned as a possible option to leave the club.
Interest in the target man is beginning to ramp up. According to the Daily Record, Hibs are considering a move for the six-foot-two centre-forward late on in the window. English clubs only have until 7pm on Monday, September 1, to complete any transfers, but Scotland have a later deadline of 11pm that same day.
Dykes has already equalled his goalscoring tally from last season's League One campaign thanks to his dramatic winner against Blackburn Rovers late into stoppage time, poking home a cross from close range to seal three points for City.
He joined Birmingham a year ago from QPR for a reported fee of £1 million, and hasn't started any of the club's three games since they made their return to the Championship, with Jay Stansfield, Kyogo Furuhashi and Marvin Ducksch all considered to be ahead of him in City's centre-forward pecking order.
Hibs would like to bring Dykes in on loan and reconnect him with his former Blues team-mate and League One promotion winner Grant Hanley, who signed for the Edinburgh-based club earlier in the summer.
The pair also play together for the Scotland national team, and a move away from Birmingham could help the striker to secure a spot in Steve Clarke's squad for next summer's FIFA World Cup, should they qualify for it.
Other Scottish teams, plus some on the English side of the border, are supposedly keen on signing Dykes too before the deadline on Monday, as per the Daily Record.
As much as Birmingham will be able to easily afford the luxury of having four top strikers on their books, it'd be a waste for 29-year-old Dykes to ride the crest of the club's wave while not contributing much to what's happening on the pitch.
Gettin cameos here and there is not why footballers put all that hard effort into becoming the best that they can be.
It's a short career and you want to be able to maximise it while you can, both financially and physically.
A loan move could work well for all parties. It'd mean that Birmingham wouldn't have to permanently lose Dykes, plus he'd be guaranteed the nice wage that he is likely on at St. Andrew's while also getting better opportunities at regular minutes.
