Birmingham City have been urged to avoid a transfer deal with Brighton for 'better options out there' this summer...

Birmingham City have been linked with a fresh move to re-sign Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper James Beadle this summer.

James Beadle has had various loans in the EFL, having featured for the likes of Crewe Alexandra, Oxford United, and Sheffield Wednesday before the age of 21 to develop away from Brighton.

It was with Birmingham City under Chris Davies where Beadle spent the 2025/26 season, playing 38 times for the club in their first season back in the Championship. Blues are now looking to kick on after 2026 saw them achieve their highest league finish since 2015/16.

With two extra play-off places available next term, Davies will know how important this summer is. Beadle has been linked to Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham recently, which is a transfer link likely to be met with enthusiasm from some and disappointment from others.

FLW's Birmingham fan pundit Jason Moore was asked about the fact Birmingham are in talks for another loan deal for Brighton’s James Beadle. The towering stopper split opinion last season and we asked if he would be happy if he returned to be Blues as first-choice, or if they need better if they’re going to push for promotion.

He responded: "No, not really. I don't think I'd be happy with it. I don't think he was terrible last season, as many people made him out to be, but he's not for me.

"Not if we are going for promotion. I don't think he's quite good enough. For a side that have quite openly said, 'this is where we're going and this is how we'll get there', I just don't think you can have any passengers in your side.

"I think that's what he's going to be. Does he also instill confidence into the fans? Probably not. Does he put confidence into his back four? Probably not. Do I think he's going to be a really good 'keeper one day? I really do.

"I do think there's a good goalkeeper there but I don't think it's something Blues can entertain at the moment. I don't think he's someone we can have who is not quite there.

"I think there are other 'keepers out there who we could get and not have to worry. I get that there is an argument for consistency and stuff like that. It would also be another loan, so not financially costing the club. But I just think there are better options out there.

"There's a reason why other people rate him and think he's going to go on to do really good things. But I just don't think he's the 'keeper that Blues need. To be honest, I don't even think we are the club he needs for his development.

"I don't think it was a particularly good loan last year. So, I hope we don't sign him and hope the reports that we are looking at it don't come to fruition. It's just not the player I want and when I did see the reports? It's just very uninspiring. Hopefully we go elsewhere."

Birmingham City have to target a particular type of goalkeeper this summer

Birmingham missing out on Illan Meslier may ultimately prove to be a blessing in disguise, with the same also applicable if they fail to land Beadle. While both goalkeepers possess undeniable talent, neither represents the proven, dependable presence Birmingham arguably need for a promotion push.

Meslier's performances have fluctuated in recent seasons at Championship level, while Beadle, despite his huge potential, is still developing and likely to experience the inconsistency that comes with youth again next term.

After investing heavily to build a squad capable of challenging for automatic promotion, Birmingham should be targeting an experienced and reliable number one who can deliver instant quality from day one. In a Championship promotion race where fine margins decide everything, proven consistency between the posts could be worth far more than long-term potential.

Signings like Dael Fry are proven, dependable, peak-age players in positions of need. That is the same process Blues should have in looking for a new goalkeeper this summer, with it being such a crucial position on the pitch.
