With the January transfer window entering its final few days, Sheffield United remain active behind the scenes as Chris Wilder looks to add quality rather than quantity to his squad before the deadline.
So far, business has been limited. The only incoming is Ki-Jana Hoever, who has arrived on loan to provide cover and competition at right-back for standout performer Femi Seriki. While the addition of Hoever is important, it is clear the Blades still have work to do if they are to fully address the gaps identified earlier in the window.
Central midfield has been a key focus. United have been linked with several options, including Brentford’s Frank Onyeka, but reports suggest the Blades are not currently favourites to secure his signature. As is often the case late in the window, competition, player preference, and the stance of parent clubs are all proving significant obstacles.
There has also been movement at centre-back. It was reported this week that United were closing in on a loan deal for Crystal Palace’s young defender Chadi Riad until the end of the campaign.
Speaking ahead of the Millwall clash at his pre-match press conference, Wilder admitted progress has been slower than hoped.
“Nothing has happened over the last 24-48 hours. It has been a touch frustrating, would’ve loved to have got a couple of the players we’ve been chasing in for the weekend but that’s not to be,” he said. “Let’s see how we go after the weekend, obviously got until Monday teatime to do some business and we’re working as hard as we ever have.”
Despite the frustration, the United boss remains confident that the squad will be in a stronger position once the window closes.
“We will be stronger once the window shuts than what we were when the window opened.”
When asked whether a couple of signings before the deadline is realistic, Wilder was clear about his approach, he said, “Yeah, that’s all we’re after. Quality not quantity.”
He also pointed to returning players and minutes being built up as an important factor in strengthening the group, highlighting recent game time for Tom Davies and the return of several squad members from injury.
Attention has also turned to the club’s longer-term planning. Wilder confirmed United have internally assessed young Barnsley player Reyes Cleary.
“We know about him with him being a local boy. When you see these types of boys they are the type of boys we’re interested in. He’s one that we’ve had a look at internally but we wouldn’t be doing our job if we weren’t and everyone in the Championship is doing the same.”

Meanwhile, Ryan One has headed out on loan to Lincoln City for the second half of the season, a move Wilder believes will benefit both player and club.
“He wants to play which is a great attribute that he’s got that desire to play. He wants to play for our first team, obviously he’s down the pecking order a little bit with Pat coming in and Callum playing at the top of the pitch and Tyrese and Tom. We think it’s a great fit for him and a great fit for Lincoln. We like the way Lincoln go about their business, they’re near the top of the division, he’s battling it out, there’s no guarantees for Ryan but he’s got an exciting second part of the season to look forward to”, Wilder explained.
