Boca Juniors have decided not to sign a new goalkeeper after Agustín Marchesín’s serious knee injury, opting to see out the rest of the semester with Leandro Brey and Javier García while promoting a reserve option. According to LaNumer12.com.ar, the call was made by the board led by Juan Román Riquelme.

Marchesín was forced off during the 3-0 Copa Libertadores win over Barcelona of Ecuador at La Bombonera, a convincing night soured by the setback.

Tests confirmed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, sidelining the 38-year-old for months. CONMEBOL regulations, article 3.7.5.12, allow a club to permanently replace an injured goalkeeper on its Libertadores list once the severity is certified by its medical commission and the required Form 7 is submitted.

For Sunday’s Superclásico at the Monumental, Brey is expected to start. It would be his first appearance in the fixture.

Brey has 33 first team matches for Boca and has recorded 16 clean sheets in those outings, excluding reserve football.
