Boca Juniors opened their 2026 Copa Libertadores group campaign with a 2-1 win away to Universidad Católica in Chile, with Leandro Paredes and Adam Bareiro scoring.

LaNumer12.com.ar reports that the night also featured a familiar face, as Mauro Boselli watched from the stands at the Claro Arena, a presence some hope brings luck.

A Boca academy graduate and part of the 2007 Libertadores-winning squad, Boselli greeted former team-mates, among them Santiago Ascacibar of the azul y oro and Universidad Católica’s Fernando Zuqui, both ex-Estudiantes colleagues.

Competition with Martín Palermo limited Boselli’s minutes at Boca. From his debut in a 7-2 loss at Rosario Central on 6 July 2003, he played 59 games and scored 11. He was in the squads that won the 2004 Copa Sudamericana and 2007 Libertadores.

He joined Estudiantes in 2009, starred as the Pincha lifted the 2009 Libertadores, then had spells with Wigan, Genoa, Palermo, León, Corinthians and Cerro Porteño.

After Paraguay he sought a Boca return, later saying he believed no formal offer came because the coach then, which he thought was Alfaro, preferred Soldano. He rejoined Estudiantes in 2021, stayed until late 2023 and retired. Boca now turn to Sunday’s clásico with Independiente at La Bombonera at 19:30 in the Torneo Apertura.
