After a slow start to the game in terms of chances, the visitors created the first opportunity through Philipp Strompf. Moments later, Ismaël Gharbi came the closest at the other end before Cajetan Lenz’s block.
The hosts also followed Farid Alfa-Ruprecht’s side-netting shot with a clear-cut chance. Both Marius Wolf and Gharbi sensationally hit the woodwork in the space of a few seconds as Bochum survived going behind in the 25th minute.
Instead, it was the 2. Bundesliga side that took the lead before the half-time break. Germany U18 star Francis Onyeka and Alfa-Ruprecht, who are both on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, combined to send Gerrit Holtmann through on goal. The former Mainz winger’s attempt was deflected by Chrislain Matsima on its way into the net.
Sandro Wagner introduced Mert Kömür for the second-half, but it was Strompf who attempted the first shot once again. Before the hour mark, Wagner also subbed on Dimitrios Giannoulis and Samuel Essende.
However, Uwe Rösler’s team managed to reduce the danger for the most part. Alexis Claude-Maurice had one of Augsburg’s best chances after coming on as a substitute as Timo Horn had to make a save from a direct free-kick. Bochum's own substitute Michael Obafemi should've ended the tie in the other end, but his miss wasn't costly in the end.
The hosts ended the match with only two shots on target. After a successive first-round exit from the cup, Bochum finally reached the Round of 16. For Wagner, it’s another forgettable night after their 6-0 loss on Saturday to RB Leipzig.
