Spain’s 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina in the World Cup final was followed by a ceremony where Borja Iglesias shook Donald Trump’s hand, while Cristian Romero did not.

According to L'Équipe, Argentina’s players collected runner-up medals first, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and the United States president standing side by side to present them, alternating recipients.

Cristian Romero received his medal from Infantino and passed by Trump without a handshake. Trump had just given Julian Alvarez his medal and turned to the official supplying more at the moment Romero walked through. The gesture did not appear political.

Spain’s squad then received gold medals. Iglesias, who had said reluctantly he would shake Trump’s hand to avoid going to prison and hoped the moment would pass quickly, did so without making eye contact. Decorated by Infantino, he moved on despite the American’s “Good job”.

Iglesias, a Celta Vigo forward known for campaigning against racism and homophobia, had also criticised ticket prices for the final. He has nine caps for Spain and is known for his painted nails.
