Nico Schlotterbeck is fast-emerging as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga, with the German already establishing himself as a real leader in the Dortmund backline.

A centre-back by trade, Schlotterbeck is known for his technical brilliance and speed, making him a crafty operator who can not only execute forward passes but also break down counter-attacks.

Schlotterbeck has been performing consistently for Dortmund for years and has now attracted the interest of top clubs across Europe, including Barcelona.

Kehl admits Schlotterbeck is giving it a thought

In a recent interview, Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has admitted that Schlotterbeck is giving ongoing transfer rumours a bit of thought.

I know Nico is giving it a lot of thought,” Kehl said (h/t Diario SPORT) when asked about interest from clubs such as Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

However, Kehl is hopeful that Nico will sign a new contract at Borussia Dortmund, as he has a close bond with the club.

“He’s very attached to Borussia, so I’m optimistic. His goal is to succeed and win titles. We’ll be flexible financially and do everything we can to keep him in Dortmund,” he said.

It has been reported that Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is a huge admirer of Schlotterbeck and would love to have him in the team.

The German international, in fact, could be an ideal replacement for Inigo Martinez, as the two centre-backs operate in a similar style.

If anything, Schlotterbeck has a much higher ceiling due to his speed and ability to read the game, making him an ideal component in Flick’s high defensive line.
