Borussia Dortmund will look to make changes in the summer as a forgettable season comes to a close. There have been reports of a possible departure of some players. Among them are Gio Reyna and Marcel Sabitzer.
Despite making his first team debut during the 2019/20 season, Reyna came into the spotlight at BVB during the following campaign. That’s when he started to get regular play time and also formed an exciting partnership with Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker famously called him ‘The American Dream’ and underlined the importance of Reyna’s contributions.
However, recurring injury issues prevented Reyna from performing at a consistent level. He was even loaned out to Nottingham Forest during the second half of the 2023/24 season.
Reyna’s impact on the team is dwindling, and he is no longer the player he once was. With Borussia Dortmund looking to make changes and start next season on a strong foot, this will likely be the 22-year-old's last season at the Signal Iduna Park.
On the other hand, there is the issue of Marcel Sabitzer. Following his 19 million Euros move from Bayern Munich, the Austrian international hasn’t been able to replicate the brilliant form he previously showed for RB Leipzig and his national team.
Even though his first season wasn’t entirely bad, his second one has been a disappointment. BVB fans will fondly remember his game against Atletico Madrid in last season’s Champions League quarter-finals. But Sabitzer has failed to register a goal or an assist in any of the 23 appearances he has made in the Bundesliga this season. His only goal contributions this season have been for Austria in the UEFA Nations League.
Reyna’s contract runs out in 2026, while Sabitzer has a deal until 2027. It is unlikely that Dortmund will let Reyna leave for free or that he will sign an extension. Sabitzer, who has previously been labeled unpopular in the dressing room, is also more likely to leave in the summer. Even though there haven’t been any concrete links to another club, the situation points to one possible ending.
