The scenario: BVB travel as third in the table to ninth-placed Freiburg. Over the last six matchdays, only Bayern Munich (16) have won more points than Borussia Dortmund (14). The total of 28 points is seven more than at the same time last season.
Home & away: SC Freiburg won 11 of their current 16 points at home this season. After three wins, two draws and only one home defeat (against Augsburg at the start of the season), the club sits seventh in the home table. Borussia Dortmund are tied in second place of the away table with TSG Hoffenheim. The result is clearly positive with four wins, two draws, and one loss.
Head-to-head record: Borussia Dortmund have been a feared opponent for a long time for Freiburg, who have managed to win only two of their last 28 Bundeslia encounters against the Black&Yellows (both in the year 2021, both 2-1 at home). Ever since their move to Europa Park Stadium, all three home games against BVB were lost (3-1, 4-2 and 4-1). The last seven matches in either Dortmund or Freiburg, were won by Borussia – against no other Bundesliga club have BVB such a long winning streak. Freiburg, on the other hand, have not gone without any points for such a long period against any other opponent. Borussia Dortmund also achieved their longest winning streak in history against Freiburg: 12 consecutive wins between 2010 and 2017.
Statistics: The 2-0 against Hoffenheim last matchday was already the seventh Dortmund game this season in which the team kept a clean sheet. That equals the record of the entire 2024/25 season. With 11 goals conceded, only Bayern Munich (nine) have conceded fewer goals. Freiburg have scored 65 percent of their goals at home (the third-highest percentage) and had more shots on goal in their six home games than in their seven away games. Freiburg were much more dominant at home, with 57 % possession, compared to only 49 % away. Freiburg won 52 % of their duels at home and less than half of that percentage away. In their most recent home game, they dominated Mainz, beating them 4-0.
Last season: Against one of the leagues most high-performance teams, BVB covered 1.5 kilometers more in the first half and deservedly went into half-time with a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Karim Adeyemis (34), given their superiority in shots on goal (8-3) and possession (56 %). Just 33 seconds into the second half, Bensebaini prevented Freiburg from scoring 1-1. What followed was a period of sustained pressure by Freiburg, but then Carney Chukwuemeka scored the 2-0 (52) on his first start for Dortmund and substitute Serhou Guirassy managed the 3-0 for BVB (68). Jamie Gittens sealed the win by scoring the 4-0 (78), with Eggestein scoring the consolation goal shortly before the final whistle, making it 4-1.
Biggest away win: On 17 March 2002, Borussia Dortmund won the clash with 5-1, with goals scored by Evanilson (15), Dede (64), Amoroso (66) and Koller (69/70), after Freiburg had initially taken the lead when Kobiashvili (9) scored directly from a free-kick making it 1-0 for SC Freiburg.Compiled by Boris Rupert
