Palmeiras received a letter from Jhon Textor on Thursday stating Botafogo will not negotiate Danilo in this transfer window, according to Globo.com.

The club opted not to push talks for now, aiming to preserve good relations after the recent Marlon Freitas deal between the sides.

Palmeiras are likely to look at other midfield options. Talks for Jhon Arias are at an advanced stage, and they still hope to sign Nino.

No formal bid had been made for Danilo as Palmeiras assessed what to propose. One idea was to use Botafogo’s financial position to persuade them to sell.

Danilo had three months of image rights overdue and had not received any Fundo de Garantia de Tempo de Serviço (FGTS) instalments. Botafogo then paid part of the debt and kept the player.

Days later, another exit opened as John Textor, owner of Botafogo’s SAF, discussed a €19m move to Nottingham Forest. Botafogo still owe €20m for the midfielder’s signing.

That move did not advance after a Rio de Janeiro court suspended all sales and asset negotiations by the Botafogo SAF. Danilo said he was surprised by news of a near return to England.
