Flamengo sporting director José Boto says Luiz Eduardo “Bap” Baptista’s remarks about possibly spending R$ one billion in 2026 made recent transfer negotiations harder for the club.
“It is obvious this type of statement, especially as it was interpreted, causes problems. I will not go into finances, that is not my area, but it does hinder us. When the other side hears this kind of thing, the asking prices are higher, especially in Brazil,” said Boto, speaking to GE.
Baptista had said on FlamengoTV that, to keep winning, he could spend R$ one billion next year within a two year plan, stressing that spending depends on the ability to pay and that whether he should do so would be a matter for evaluation.
Alongside Lucas Paquetá, Flamengo have added two more signings. Centre-back Vitão, formerly of Internacional, has arrived to bolster Filipe Luís’s defence. Goalkeeper Andrew has also joined to compete with Agustín Rossi.
The club still want a centre forward for Filipe Luís’s side. After the heavy outlay to land Paquetá, however, they do not intend to make rash moves and will monitor opportunities.
Flamengo are next in action on Wednesday 4 February, facing Internacional at 19h, Brasília time, at the Maracanã in the second round of the Brasileirão.
