Estela Braga, wife of Flamengo player Emerson Royal, says she has been racially abused online by some Benfica supporters after the friendly between the clubs. According to Glorioso 1904, she went on social media to report a wave of insults aimed at her family.
The row followed a challenge between Emerson Royal and Jaden Umeh that left the Benfica winger injured. Since then, Braga said she and their son, Ravi, two, have been targeted with abusive messages.
She posted examples of the messages and said she usually ignores such comments. She added that someone manages her account and deletes this material.
Braga said the scale of the abuse prompted her to respond. She added that people in Portugal were attacking her over an incident in a match, despite her not being a player, and that her son had also been brought into it.
She said the posts included sexist insults, with her being labelled maria chuteira, alongside demeaning abuse towards her and her husband. She added that there were racist slurs likening them to monkeys and expressed disgust that such messages still exist.
