Billal Brahimi has left Santos after his contract termination was published on Monday in the CBF's BID, according to Globo.com. The French-Algerian forward departs after featuring for only 26 minutes.
That outing was a draw with Bragantino in last year's Brasileirão, on matchweek 25. He was later named in squads but did not play, then head coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda stopped selecting him during the relegation fight.
This year, although registered for the Campeonato Paulista and the Campeonato Brasileiro, he did not feature.
In recent months Santos loaned him to Estrela da Amadora in Portugal, covering part of his wages. The arrangement had Santos execute payments until the end of the European season due to the Portuguese club's Financial Fair Play constraints.
Now a free agent, he is expected to sign permanently with the Portuguese side, lifting Santos' obligations for the remaining months of a contract that had been due to run until the end of 2026. The club estimates savings of up to R$ 8 million.
The situation also drew criticism of football executive Alexandre Mattos over a signing that went unused. Brahimi was at the centre of a dispute between Mattos and a journalist after a Corinthians draw in the Paulistão.
