Brais Méndez has been suspended for two LaLiga matches after his red card at San Mamés on Sunday, the Spanish federation’s disciplinary committee confirmed on Wednesday. He remains eligible for the Copa del Rey tie against Alavés tonight.
The Real Sociedad player was dismissed for a contentious swipe at Aitor Paredes, an incident the centre-back exaggerated. The committee classed it as violent conduct away from play or with the game stopped, and applied accessory fines under article 52 of the disciplinary code, article 130.2.
Real Sociedad argued the act followed provocation by Paredes and that there was no intent, aggression or excessive force, nor serious consequences. The club asked for proportionality and, if punished, the minimum sanction.
Méndez will miss the next two league matches, first against Elche and then at the Bernabéu against Real Madrid. The length of the ban and the Bernabéu falling as the extra match have fuelled the row.
The debate has sharpened in light of Pathe Ciss receiving a one-match suspension after a heavy challenge on Dani Ceballos in Rayo Vallecano’s meeting with Real Madrid. That case was deemed violent and within play.
