Brazil swept Haiti aside 3-0 as the Caribbean side became the first nation to be eliminated from the 2026 World Cup at the Philadelphia Stadium.
Matheus Cunha’s impressive before Vinícius Júnior added a third sent Seleção well on their way to an easy victory, despite the Haitians’ valiant high press as they neared an exit with one group game to spare.
Their perfect night did take a hit before the break as Raphinha was forced off with a suspected muscle injury, yet Carlo Ancelotti’s side made amends for a subpar display against Morocco with a showpiece performance to go top of Group C.
While Cunha had an air of fortune about his first goal, tucking away the rebound from Vini Jr’s shot after it was parried by Haiti captain Johny Placide, his second almost ripped the net off flying into the top left corner with 36 minutes gone.
Then the Manchester United’s provider became Brazil’s third goalscorer with his second of the World Cup, latching onto Lucas Paquetá’s lofted pass over the Haiti defence before slotting cooly into around the goalkeeper and into the net.
Raphinha had been replaced by exciting Bournemouth winger Rayan, with local media suspecting he had sustained a hamstring injury with the Barcelona man clutching his thigh while sat on the pitch in conversation with the team physios.
But there was soon a buzz around the stadium to replace the anguish at the sight of Raphinha’s departure as Real Madrid teenager Endrick entered the frame from the bench late into the second half.
Brazil cruised through the second half to an easy victory, going top of Group C ahead of Morocco on goal difference and one point ahead of Scotland before they meet with the latter team next Wednesday in pole position for the round of 32.
Raphinha being ruled out will be yet another unwanted hit to Brazil’s wide areas, with his country level on four points with Morocco after their 1-0 victory over Scotland – who themselves lie just a single point behind in third.
It will remain all to play for when Seleção face off with Scotland in their final group stage game next Wednesday at 23:00 (BST), and to Carlo Ancelotti’s anguish he may oversee the crucial game without one of his key attacking assets.
