Breno Bidon, the 21-year-old Corinthians midfielder, has secured Italian citizenship, a step that could widen his options in Europe from the next transfer window.

According to Globo.com, leading leagues including Spain, France and Italy cap non-EU players, and his new status means he would not count towards those limits.

His agent, Fernando Brito, said dual nationality does not change price, which the market sets, but it broadens opportunities. He argued clubs often keep non-EU slots for match-deciders, usually forwards, and take greater risks on those signings. He added that while Bidon had been competing for one of three foreign places at each European club, possibilities are now far greater.

The midfielder, the grandson of an Italian, began the process in 2024 before his senior debut. He is recognised as an Italian citizen but still needs the passport, which may take months. Brito said he could already be registered as an EU player in Serie A, that a club might buy him now and take him at year end, and that they expect the passport before the September window closes.

Bidon is established in the first team and has won three titles with Corinthians. He is open to a move abroad, though any deal depends on the board, which holds 90% of his economic rights. The club needs transfer income but is reluctant to lose a first-choice midfielder.

Corinthians face Fluminense at the Maracanã on Wednesday at 21:30, with Breno Bidon in the squad.
