Brentford cruised to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 5-0 victory over Grimsby Town at Blundell Park, ending the League Two side’s remarkable cup run.
Despite making nine changes from their Premier League win over Liverpool, Brentford took control early and led 3-0 by half-time.
Mathias Jensen opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a strike from the edge of the box, before Keane Lewis-Potter doubled the lead four minutes later with a header from Reiss Nelson’s cross. Nelson added a third just before the break with a low drive from 20 yards, marking his first start since joining on loan from Arsenal in September.
Grimsby, who had beaten Manchester United in the second round, created a few early openings but were unable to convert.
The Bees continued to dominate after the interval. Fabio Carvalho converted a penalty in the 54th minute after being fouled by Evan Khouri, and substitute Nathan Collins headed in Brentford’s fifth from a Jensen corner late in the game.
Brentford’s clinical display completed a third consecutive win, following top-flight victories over Liverpool and West Ham, and saw them move into the last eight of the competition.
